Training opportunities are increasing: young people in Stormarn and Lauenburg in demand!

In a dramatic review of the training year 2023/2024, the members of the training alliance of the districts of Stormarn and Duchy of Lauenburg presented alarming numbers. While the number of people interested in training to 1,679 increase - an increase of 3.1 percent compared to the previous year - the number of reported training positions has dropped to 2,396. That means a decrease of 6.4 percent! On September 30th, 374 apprenticeships remained vacant, which underlines the urgency of the situation.

The Bad Oldesloe Employment Agency, under the direction of Kathleen Wieczorek, warns: "The chances of starting a career remain good, but there are not enough young people who are interested in training." The increase in applicants with a migration background, which now make up 387 - is particularly worrying - an increase of 23 percent compared to the previous year. These young people are increasingly recognizing dual training as a key to a successful career, but the language barriers are a great challenge.

The companies in the region face a critical challenge. Despite the high level of training in the craft, where the Stormarn district craftsmanship reports a consistently high level of training, many places remain vacant. Marcus Krause, Managing Director of the Stormarn district craftsmanship, emphasizes: "There are free training positions that could be occupied at any time." The Lübeck Chamber of Commerce and Industry reports of a slight decline in the completed training contracts, which illustrates the urgency of more intensive professional orientation. "Almost every second company could not fill all training positions," explains Sebastian Grothkopp from the IHK to Lübeck.

Time is pushing and the companies are required to report their training opportunities and to stay active. Wieczorek appeals to the employer: "Use our support offers and keep your training investment!" The future of training in Stormarn and Duchy of Lauenburg depends on the cooperation between companies, schools and the employment agency. The chances for young people are there - they just have to be taken!
