Transport winter tires safely: This is how you avoid serious accidents!

Security in road traffic has a top priority, and correct load securing plays a crucial role. The ADAC automobile club emphasizes the importance that vehicles with improper loading are not only confronted with high fines of up to 200 euros, but also with a risk of life and life. There is special caution, especially when transporting winter wheels that are to be brought to the workshop for assembly. Inadequately secured tires can have devastating consequences in the event of an accident.

If you want to bring your winter bikes to the workshop, you should know how the cargo is properly secured. The ADAC recommends using lashing straps or a special tire protection network. When using lashing straps that correspond to the EN 12195 standard, the belt is threaded by the hubs of the tires and the ends are attached to the eyelets in the trunk floor. This tightens the cargo.

Effective methods for load securing

A tire protection network offers even better stability. It completely encloses the tires from the outside and is anchored in four lashing brackets in the trunk. This method ensures that the tires are better secured. The back seat backrest can stay up, which enables additional stabilization. The three-point belts of the rear seats can be clinified across the cross into the opposite belt locks in order to reinforce protection during an abrupt braking or an impact.

If not all tires can be accommodated in the trunk, an additional tire in the footwell between the rear seat and the side driver back can be stowed away. In this case, the seat should be pushed as far back as possible in order to create further space, whereby it must be ensured that nobody sits in this place.

Risks of unsecured cargo

An impressive crash test of the ADAC shows the potentially catastrophic consequences of unsecured tires in the event of an impact. With a VW Golf V accelerated to 50 km/h, the unsecured tires were catapulted into the front seats. Headrests tore off and the tires flew towards the windscreen with enormous swing. The forces that work during a collision are huge: a 15 kilogram tire can generate the force of about 600 kilograms in the vehicle and cause serious injuries.

The tests also illustrate that unsecured tires are already at risk of braking or evasive maneuvers. The bikes tend to slip in the vehicle and could even endanger other inmates. The ADAC therefore urges drivers to always act responsibly when transporting tires and apply the correct safety technology. This is the only way to avoid serious accidents and injuries.
