Abitur on the west coast: dramatic differences to Flensburg!
Abitur on the west coast: dramatic differences to Flensburg!
A shock for the education system on the west coast: In the districts of Dithmarschen and Steinburg, only 31.3 % or 34.1 % of the students reach the Abitur! For comparison: Flensburg, the city with the best graduates, has an impressive 71 %. The alarming report comes from the state government and throws a bright light on the educational gap between rural and urban areas in Schleswig-Holstein.
lack of teachers and long ways
The cause of this worrying Abitur quota? Bernd Schauer, the state spokesman for the Union for Education and Science, makes it unequivocally clear that the students on the west coast are disadvantaged. Long journey times to high schools and the lack of community schools with upper level make educational success almost impossible! But that's not all: an acute lack of teachers is burdening the schools in the region. The proportion of unqualified temporary staff is highest here and has a drastic impact on teaching quality. More and more students are fighting to find their place in the education system.
Responsibility of the communities
Despite the alarming numbers, the state government remains calm and blame the communities. A spokeswoman for the Ministry of Education makes it clear that responsibility for school offers is in the hands of the municipalities. These determine the school offer themselves and seem to have failure when it comes to educational opportunities on the west coast. The situation is unsustainable and requires immediate attention to give the students a fair chance of a high school diploma!
