Torgau: Property tax increase ensures heated debate in the city council!
Torgau. On November 26, 2024, the city council will decide on the property tax rates, and the tension increases! Property tax B, which is paid for built -up and undeveloped land, could be increased from currently 360 percent to 391 percent. This is a reaction to the suggestion of treasurer Silke Schneider, who brought a drastic increase to 400 percent from January 2025 and 435 percent from 2026.
The new draft resolution supported by the SPD/DIE LINKE Group shows that the AfD has withdrawn its original proposal to set property tax B to only 371 percent. In addition, property tax A for agricultural and forestry companies remains 250 percent, contrary to the recommendation of the city administration, which had proposed an increase to 315 percent. The trade tax remains unchanged at 400 percent.
Torgau so far has the lowest lifting rates
The Torgauers benefit from the lowest lifting rates in Saxony, but the city administration warns of a "increasing financing deficit in the medium term". Schneider argues that the city can no longer afford the low lifting rates and favors an increase to the average leveling rate. The CDU and AfD, on the other hand, fear resentment among the population and suggest alternative sources of income, such as higher fees for garage tenants.
In addition, the extraordinary city council meeting on the acceptance of a loan of 2 million euros is discussed. The public session begins at 5 p.m. in the Ratsaal, followed by a meeting of the administrative committee at 5:30 p.m., in which the focus is on the 2025 budget and the awarding of construction work.
