Gauck in Bad Düben: Students ask burning questions about peace
Bad Düben. A memorable event: The former Federal President Joachim Gauck visited the spa town as part of the peace decade and inspired around 200 pupils Albert-Schweitzer Forum. With a personal letter, the co-organizer Simone Voigt convinced the 84-year-old, who experienced live how actively school life and the parish are here. The event, moderated by Kai-Thorsten Buchele, asked the question: "How can peace succeed together?" and was musically framed by a course and the school band.
The students were well prepared and asked Gauck challenging questions. An anecdote about the confusion of a fifth grader who thought the former president was the "Papa of Olaf Holz" was particularly amusing. Gauck, who encouraged the students to deal with current political issues, spoke about the challenges of peace in a world in which violence often predominates. When it comes to the provocative question of what peace is necessary, when violence seems to always be observed, he replied optimistically: "There are more people who long for peace and want him than those who need war."

The discussion also revolved around explosive topics such as Trump's possible re-election and the war in the Middle East. Gauck commented on the debate about military service and supported the idea of a social year that goes beyond defense. He emphasized the need to become active for society. When asked about the support of the Ukraine with weapons, he made it clear: "We turn against the warmongers." The students were impressed by Gauck's clear views and his ability to explain complex topics in an understandable way.
After the official round, Gauck took time for personal conversations with the students, which only intensified the applause and enthusiasm of those present. "You prepared yourself well," he praised and left space for further questions. An impressive evening that not only captivated the students, but also the numerous guests.
