New cycling route in Meißen: Safe to the Elbe without detours!
In the city of Meißen, an important innovation for cycling has been implemented: Gerbergasse is now open for opposing bicycle traffic. Cyclists who are traveling from Neugasse towards Elbe can now continue directly to the small market without having to turn into the Hahnemannsplatz.
So far,Radlers have had to turn from Neugasse to the right into the Hahnemannsplatz, which was often not observed and thus favored conflicts between pedestrians and cyclists. To remedy this lack of security, the road traffic authority, the working group cycling and the Wegenbund Saxony worked together to find a practical solution. Today the new section of the route was officially opened.
redesigned bike paths and traffic routing
The marking work for the route in Gerbergasse, which extends from Roßmarkt to Kleinmarkt/Martinstrsbrücke, are now complete. At the branches at the small market and Martinstrasse, a clear division was created, which enables cyclists to either turn right onto the Martinsbrücke or left into the small market. These new ways make it easier to access important goals in the city and make it possible to easily get to the old town bridge and to the Elberadweg via Heinrichsplatz.
Another planned expansion stipulates that Fährmannstrasse will soon offer a direct connection to the B 6 and to the Elberadweg. According to the cycling working group, this regulation represents the safest and most sensible solution for all cyclists from the Triebischtal to get to the city center safely.
However, security in traffic remains the top priority. Cyclists must observe the priority of car traffic when turning into the small market. Drivers are asked to adhere to the markings when turning left into Gerbergasse and pay attention to the fact that they do not block the bike track.
The regulation for the release of Neugasse for the opposite bicycle traffic was introduced in 2018, without accidents. This positive balance speaks for the effectiveness of such measures.
collaboration and recommendations
The city of Meißen is also part of the working group of Saxon municipalities to promote cycling and foot traffic, also known as a road association. Through this cooperation, the city administration was again able to use valuable advice in order to check the release of Gerbergasse. Frank Kutzner, Managing Director of the Wegenbund, was optimistic about the growing demand for bicycle traffic in Meißen.
The Saxon State Ministry of Economics, Labor and Transport also recommends opening one -way streets to bike traffic. Because of such measures, direct connections can be created and the accessibility of many goals can be improved. This contributes to the safety of cyclists and promotes environmentally friendly mobility.
A thorough examination and corresponding traffic tours in one -way streets are essential. Conditions such as a speed limit of 30 km/h, sufficient weather and encounter widths as well as clear visibility at intersections are essential to make cycling safe.
