Churches start big action: democracy needs all citizens!
On January 7, 2025, the Lower Saxony churches announced that they were involved in a nationwide campaign that was initiated in the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Saxony and the Catholic diocese of Dresden-Meißen. Under the motto "For everyone. With heart and mind", the churches emphasize the values of human dignity, charity and cohesion that should apply to all people.
The aim of this campaign is to call the population for active participation in the upcoming Bundestag election on February 23 in order to strengthen democracy and counteract extremist positions. The Lutheran Landeskirchen Hanover, Oldenburg, Braunschweig, Schaumburg-Lippe as well as the Evangelical Reformed Church and the Catholic dioceses Osnabrück and Hildesheim are involved.

In their communication, the church representatives express that democracy is not a matter of course and that trust in the elected representatives and the participation of all citizens are necessary. These values are particularly important because democracy is increasingly questioned in Germany.The campaign includes various measures, including social media campaigns, online formats and the distribution of posters, banners and postcards. On a separate website, parishes and church facilities can download campaign material and order materials in advance of the choice. In this context, Saxon bishops in Dresden warned of the election of parties who answer complex social issues with simple statements, and emphasized the need for intensive and open discourse on social challenges.
The campaign, which is now being rolled out nationwide, ties in with a similar initiative from the previous year that took place in Saxony before the European, local and state elections.
