Greifswald wins competition: 2,241 romantic for Friedrich's heir!
An impressive sum of 1,270 euros was collected as part of a special competition between Greifswald and Dresden on the occasion of the 250th birthday of the important painter Caspar David Friedrich (1774-1840). The donations came from the participants and spectators who took part in the event in the Elbestadt in September. This amount is now used for the restoration of two historical entrance gates of the Trinitatis cemetery, where the famous romantic found his last rest. One of these goals served as a motif for his painting "The Cemetery", created around 1825.The city marketing company has announced that the administration has achieved its goal of collecting a total of 15,000 euros for the project faster than expected. These funds form the basis for the municipal promotion of the restoration work. The gate made of sandstone, which Friedrich drew and painted, urgently needs a renovation. A total of almost 97,000 euros are required for the repair of both gate systems, including another striking entrance to the celebration hall.
take a look into the past
in the Friedrich year 2024, Greifswald, the birthplace of the painter, challenged Dresden. The aim was to gather most people who were dressed in the romantic style. The Saxons were able to come up with 2,033 participants, but Greifswald put the numbers in the shade with 2,241 participants and thus won the bet.
Dresden was the center of Friedrich's life for over four decades, until his death in 1840. In this former residence city, he studied the works of old masters in the Gemäldegalerie, took part in art discussions, began painting and founded a family. Many of his main works were created here, and the surrounding landscape inspired him during his hikes through Saxon and Bohemian Switzerland. In his studio he composed the impressions and motifs that finally became masterpieces of German romance.
The funds collected are not only financial support for the restoration, but also a sign of appreciation for the artistic legacy of Caspar David Friedrich. The initiative aims to preserve the cultural heritage and to underline the importance of romance in German art history.
This exciting development is further proof of how art and community are significantly connected. The restoration of the gate facilities will not only keep the memory of Friedrich alive, but will also give future generations the opportunity to deal with his work.
