Such tensile stresses could ultimately have led to collapse. The second theory says that the last tram that passed the bridge created a kind of "jerk" that may initiate the fracture. First, the bridge was able to stabilize through the paddocks to neighboring sections, but finally fell into the Elbe.

Another problem is the foundations of the bridge. These seem to have been in a worrying state before the collapse. The cause could be the so -called "chloride -induced corrosion". This dangerous corrosion occurs when road salt penetrates into the steel of the bridge and leads to a selective decomposition. This could explain why individual parts of the bridge collapsed.
