Six impressive sculptures shine in the Capital of Culture Chemnitz!

On Friday, January 10, 2025, a remarkable art project was completed around the visitor center of the Capital of Culture Chemnitz. Six large sculptures known as "Collateral Sculptures" were set up. This temporary open -air exhibition is the result of creative cooperation between the Chemnitz entrepreneur Udo Pfeifer and the art collections of Chemnitz.

Pfeifer, who approached the design of the environment of the visitor center this year, actively searched for a partner for his project. The Chemnitz art collections supported him in this task. The aim of the initiative was to create an appealing space that not only impresses with pleasing works of art, but also stimulates tensions and discussions.

Details about the exhibition

The six sculptures come from contemporary artists and were placed on the outdoor area of the Hartmann factory. This old factory has a long history as part of Richard Hartmann's engineering office, which was built in 1864. It now acts as an information and reception center for the Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025. The renovation of the Hartmannfabrik was the result of a successful public private partnership, supported by the BUND, Free State of Saxony and City of Chemnitz.

The transport of the great vulture plastic was a logistical challenge, since it had to be transported in two parts on a 40-tonner truck. The subsequent structure also required a large crane. Udo Pfeifer was pleased with the successful completion of the project and looks expectantly on the evening lighting of the works of art.

Overall, the "Collateral Sculptures" invite you to conduct current artistic debates and to question aesthetics. The curator Sabine Maria Schmidt from the Chemnitz art collections focuses on topics such as monuments, animal sculptures, figurative and abstract sculptures as well as iconographic upheavals and pop culture. Invited artists include Atelier van Lieshout, Tatjana Doll and Lydia Thomas.

By integrating the sculptures into the cityscape, they favor a creative exchange and contribute to the cultural landscape of Chemnitz. At the same time, they symbolize the change and innovative strength of the city as part of the European Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025.
