MDR becomes a strong backbone for Chemnitz as a cultural capital 2025!

Ratained for an artistic bang! The Mitteldeutsche Rundfunk (MDR) packs the suitcases for the European Capital of Culture in Chemnitz and has announced an impressive program offensive. At a large press event on October 25, the highlights were presented, which will extend throughout the year. With gripping documentaries about the history of the city and anactable connection to the population, the MDR is transferred not only live in Chemnitz, but also nationwide and internationally via ARD, ARD Kultur and Arte.

On January 18, 2025 everything will start with a bang! The MDR is planning a spectacular theme day, including a breathtaking open-air gala around the well-known "Nischl". MDR director Ralf Ludwig emphasized the importance of dialogue with the local people and the participation of the artists. "Together we strengthen the cultural coexistence and make the variety of Chemnitz visible!" Said Ludwig. The media accompaniment to the Capital of Culture year is mainly worn by the MDR state radio house in Saxony and the MDR regional studio Chemnitz, which report on events every day and at the same time underline the connection with the region.

Already from the fourth quarter of 2024 it starts! The MDR presents numerous new documentaries that will be shown in the ARD Mediathek and other channels. The topics range from the city hall of Chemnitz to the creative minds of the city to exciting interviews with the legendary Kati Witt. Not only historical reviews are on the program, but also the current thing is not neglected, with a special documentary series that shows Chemnitz from a new perspective.

One of the greatest highlights becomes the MDR music summer, which will open in Chemnitz on August 8, 2025. Accompanied by the MDR symphony orchestra and the Robert Schumann Philharmonic, a concert full of South American sounds will bring the theater square to life. The audience should be taken with a colorful program full of joie de vivre - a real festival of culture is imminent!
