process against alleged monkey thieves

In connection with the kidnapping of the monkey lady Ruma from the Leipzig zoo, a trial start at the Chemnitz District Court was initiated. Three young men are suspected of having stolen Ruma. The case caused a sensation, especially since the defendants have so far not made a statement about their motif. Since it is a serious offense, the case was referred to the district court, which is responsible for higher punishments. The district court can only impose punishments for up to four years.

Ruma was stolen from her enclosure on Easter Sunday 2024. The accused, two men aged 18 and 19 and a 17-year-old adolescent, overcome a moat and caught the animal with a ladder. After Ruma was initially housed in a garage in Chemnitz, she was later suspended in a park in Leipzig. The value of the monkey was estimated at around 5,000 euros. Four days later, Ruma was discovered in a tree in the Reudnitz district.

The suspicious men have been in custody since June because of various predatory offenses. When evaluating cell phones, the officials found pictures and videos of the accused with the stolen monkey. In addition to the theft of Ruma, the indictment also includes raids at petrol stations and burglaries into shops. The procedure is negotiated before the youth lay judge, with adult criminal law being used for one of the suspects. Ruma now lives in a zoo in Sofia, Bulgaria, while the Leipzig zoo is planning to hand over the beard taffen couple regardless of theft, such as Tagesschau.de reported.
