The anticipation of the major cultural event beats high waves: Chemnitz became the cultural capital of Europe in 2025 and rocks the stage with an exciting program! Visitors can look forward to spectacular exhibitions in the city's museums, which not only present the history, but also the identity of the East.

The State Museum of Archeology Chemnitz (SMAC), with the captivating exhibition "Silver Gloss and Friend Das", shows the challenges and achievements of mining right from the start. Under the title "Tales of Transformation", the Chemnitz industrial museum will explore the concise of former industrial cities in Europe from April 2025. In the same month, the exhibition "European Realities" in the Gunzenhauser Museum takes you into the fascinating world of realism of the 1920s and 1930s. Another highlight will be the exhibition on the passionate work of the Norwegian painter Edvard Munch, who deals with the topic of fear and from August 2025 the paintings will shine in new light.

And that's just the beginning! In September 2025, the Chemnitz Theater celebrates the highly expected premiere of "Rummelplatz", an impressive opera, based on the novel of the same name by the author Werner Bräunig, born in Chemnitz. The event "#3000Garagen" highlights the variety of East German identity, while from January 2025 around 100 garage portraits of photographer Maria Sturm bring the stories of the garages built in the GDR. These garage courtyards become living meeting points for the community through various festivals, workshops and creative actions. The so -called Purple Path, an impressive course with sculptures of national and international artists, also combines touching memories with contemporary art and will make Chemnitz even more radiant.
