Chemnitz, Deutschland - Chemnitz is ready to shine in 2025 as the capital of culture in Europe! With incredible 150 projects and 1,000 events, the city will be the center of cultural highlights next year. Among the plans are fascinating exhibitions for the famous Norwegian painter Edvard Munch and an exciting art course that will present national and international works. In addition, the premiere of a contemporary opera for Werner Bräunig's novel "Rummelplatz" is on the program, while the sports culture is celebrated by a cross -border bike tour in memory of the legendary international peace trip. Visitors can also look forward to numerous festivals focused on democracy, street and contemporary art. The highlight will be the conversion of a former lignite power plant into a gallery for contemporary art.

Program manager Stefan Schmidtke praises the entire program was designed by the residents of Chemnitz and the region itself. This initiative shows how important culture is for peaceful coexistence in Europe. Chemnitz exceeded the competition in 2020: In the final for the title, the city prevailed against Nuremberg, Magdeburg, Hildesheim and Hanover! The motto of the events, "C the Unseen", alludes to the underdog role of the city and is intended to make hidden potential visible. The “silent center” of the population, which has withdrawn more in private in recent decades, is also addressed.

Double celebration: Chemnitz and Nova Gorica

In addition to Chemnitz, Nova Gorica in Slovenia will also be honored as the cultural capital of Europe in the coming year. The opening of the Capital of Culture year will be celebrated on January 18 in Chemnitz with a spectacular street festival and artistic actions.
