Halle honors Anton Wilhelm Amo: lecture hall IV is renamed!

Halle (Saale), Deutschland - A historical moment for the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg! On Tuesday, an lecture hall on the Steintor Campus was ceremoniously named after Anton Wilhelm Amo, the first Afro-German academic who worked at a German university. The room previously known as the lecture hall IV, which offers space for 168 students, now bears the name of a remarkable pioneer.

Anton Wilhelm Amo, born in 1703, wrote history with his impressive academic career. In 1729 he defended his disputation in Halle (Saale) on the legal position of Africans in Europe. Five years later, in 1734, his dissertation followed the complex "Leib-Seele problem" in Wittenberg. After completing his studies, Amo returned to Ghana in 1748, where he rediscovered his roots and brought his knowledge home.
