Refurbishment of the dike: Flood protection for Mansfeld-Südharz starts!
The Mansfeld-Südharz region will be in the sign of an important reconstruction in the coming week. Almost a year after the devastating flood events on the helmets, the renovation of a dike begins. This measure not only serves to restore it, but should also ensure greater security against future floods.
The dike, which is located near Mönchpfiffel-Nikolausrieth and Katharinenrieth, had to be opened specifically at the turn of 2023/2024 to protect the surrounding communities from even worse exaggerations. At the moment, part of the dike is temporarily closed with sheet piling because a hole was created there. To restore the original stability, around 2,000 tons of material are now to be used.
collaboration between federal states
The repair work is financed in particular by Thuringia, which provide 500,000 euros for the measure, while Saxony-Anhalt takes over the coordination of the construction work. This collaboration shows how important interregional collaborations are in times of natural disasters.
On Thursday the groundbreaking was set, which marked the start of work. In addition to the state authorities, the flood protection authorities and the affected counties are actively involved in the process on both sides to ensure that the renovation is carried out quickly and efficiently.
High damage after flooding
The flood events in the region had led to massive damage in winter 2023, with an estimated total damage of around 40 million euros. This sum includes the destruction of dikes and other required flood protection measures, but not the damage to private agricultural areas. The disaster was proclaimed on December 30, 2023 when hundreds of volunteers and emergency services tried to secure the dikes and to protect the communities from the flood.
In order to provide the financial means to remedy the damage, the state government has agreed to plan corresponding budgeted funds by 2028. This is an important measure to ensure that the affected regions receive the necessary support in order to recover from the damage and to be better prepared for future disasters.
The renovation work on the dike are a sign of the glimmer of hope that could shine on the region after the devastating flood. The commitment of the authorities and the community shows that despite the challenges, a possible improvement in the security precautions will be worked on in order to continue to protect the population in the future.
