Magdeburg's turnaround: protected cycle paths from 2025 for more security!

Große Diesdorfer Straße, 39112 Magdeburg, Deutschland - Magdeburg sets new standards for cyclists! The state capital Magdeburg is courageous and plans to introduce a protected cycling strip on Große Diesdorfer Strasse, an absolute premiere in Saxony-Anhalt! From autumn 2025, the city will provide more safety in road traffic with an innovative Leipzig combination track. This groundbreaking measure will not only benefit cyclists, but also offer drivers and pedestrians a safe passage.

The changes are impressive: the wheel lane is separated from the road by a continuous barrier line, so that motor vehicles are only allowed to run it over at the parking spaces. The combination trail is set up at the GERHART-HAUSTHAUS-SAUTH-Hauptmann-Straße intersection, which enables legal turns and bicycle traffic to be used. Cyclists are guided through clear markings and a safe ford over the intersection. These protected cycling areas, also known as Protected Bike Lines, will significantly increase security on the streets.

testing and future prospects

The test phase for this revolutionary concept begins in autumn 2025. Jörg Rehbaum, the responsible deputy, emphasizes the need to check the acceptance of the Leipzig combination track and, if necessary, adapt. The city has already caught up with the approval of the upper road traffic authority in order to test this pioneering measure. Magdeburg shows that it is a pioneering role in traffic safety and wants to make the urban space sustainable.

But that's not all! A protected bicycle strip is also planned in the street Am Fuchsberg, with the aim of driving the implementation forward by spring 2026. Magdeburg relies on a comprehensive cycling concept that focuses on the safety of all road users. The course are set and the city is ready to break new ground!
