Archaeologists discover treasure in the Himmelpforte monastery in the Harz!

In the Harz, history comes to life! Archaeologists are currently digging at the Himmelpforte monastery in Wernigerode and brings impressive finds to light. The excavations reveal the remains of a Gothic church, which was once a three -aisled pillar basilica with a length of at least 40 meters. Project manager Felix Biermann from the State Office for the Preservation of Monuments and Archeology Saxony-Anhalt describes the discovery as a "impressive quality"- the well-preserved stone slabs and brick footballs are a true testimony of past architecture.

The grave slabs that were uncovered in the floor of the church are particularly fascinating. Below is the artistically designed grave slab of the noble Claudia von Königstedt from 1520, which is shown in contemporary costume with long braided hair and rosary. "The stonemason work looks surprisingly fresh," says Biermann. In addition to these grave slabs, oven tiles, book locks, glass and ceramic shards as well as coins were also discovered- a treasure chest of the story!

But that's not all! In the south of the church, the researchers discovered the exam, the living area of the monks, which was surrounded by a cloister. Beautiful floors made of stone slabs and hexagonal brick tiles have also been preserved here. In the west wing, the archaeologists encountered hints of warm air heating, which probably dates from the 14th century. Such heaters were expensive and complex, a luxury that was only found in castles and monasteries - a real comfort for the monks!

The excavations at the Himmelpforte monastery run until October 10th and are to be continued next year. This project is funded with impressive 540,000 euros from federal funds, while Saxony-Anhalt contributes another 360,000 euros. A truly monumental project that reunited the history of the Harz!
