Stumbling blocks return to Zeitz: Memorial ceremony on November 28th!

In a shocking incident, ten stumbling blocks were torn out and stolen in Zeitz, Saxony-Anhalt in early October. These commemorative stones that are reminiscent of the victims of National Socialism are now being used again on November 28th. The Burgenlandkreis has agreed on the restoration in an agreement with the city administration and the initiative stumbling blocks for Zeitz.

The commemorative ceremony is accompanied by District Administrator Götz Ulrich, Mayor Christian Thieme (both CDU) and representatives of the Stumbling Steine initiative for Zeitz. Citizens are cordially invited to take part in this significant event and to pay respect to the victims.

financial support and controversy

A donation account was set up after the theft to finance the restoration of the stumbling blocks. Over 50,000 euros were collected, which is far above the original need. Originally, the excess money was to benefit the Simon Rau Center in Weißenfels. However, Enrico Kabisch, CEO of the center, expressed concerns about the use of the funds because there was no question of a jury to distribute the donations.

The situation is tense because there are only a few clubs in the Burgenland district that deal with the memory of Jewish victims of National Socialism. Kabisch emphasizes that the initiative of stumbling blocks Zeitz was last active in 2012 and that most events against anti -Semitism are organized by external groups. The Cologne artist Gunter Demnig has relocated stumbling blocks to places where Nazi victims lived or worked, and thus shows the constant importance of these commemorative stones.
