Meyer Burger: Hope for increasing production despite the decline in sales!
Thalheim, Deutschland - Thalheim/dpa - Meyer Burger, the battered Swiss solar manufacturer, is facing a dramatic turning point! In the second half of 2024, a massive increase in the production of solar modules is expected, thanks to the planned commissioning of a new production line in Goodyear, Arizona. This development, coupled with long -term acceptance contracts, should significantly increase the company's sales!
But there are also dark sides: In the first six months of 2024, Meyer Burger reported sales of only CHF 48.7 million, compared to 96.9 million in the same period last year. The reason? The strategic relocation of Germany to the USA, which led to the closure of module production in Freiberg and reduced production to a measly 105 megawatt. The liquid funds of the company have shrunk from CHF 158.6 million to CHF 83.4 million on September 30th!
locations in Germany remain central!
Despite the difficulties, Meyer Burger is committed to his German locations. Thalheim remains a central production location for solar cells, while the technology location Hohenstein-Ernstthal is preserved for the further development of the technology. However, the group structure is streamlined, which could lead to a drastic reduction in the number of employees from around 1,050 to 850 by the end of 2025. However, the exact effects on jobs in Germany are still unclear and layoffs are not excluded!
Another alarm sign: A few months ago, the closure of solar cell production in Thalheim was up for debate! Meyer Burger had declared the plans for an alternative production facility in the United States, which did not save Thalheim for the time being. But the problems in the USA continue to draw their circles. The decision to stop the project in Colorado Springs has led to a financing gap in the double -digit millions. An external restructuring consultant was commissioned to advance as soon as possible. Meyer Burger wants to come back to a stable and profitable course by 2026!
