Climate change: New heavy rain hazard protects Saxony-Anhalt!

The alarm bells ring in Saxony-Anhalt! In view of the unstoppable climate change, heavy rain becomes more and more real. After devastating floods in Valencia, who demanded human lives, the Ministry of Environment Saxony-Anhalt, together with the Federal Office of Cartography and Geodesy (BKG), has published a decisive heavy rain hazard card. This map that the Environment Minister Prof. Dr. Armin Willingmann and BKG President Prof. Dr. Paul Becker has now been available online and should act as a lifesaver!

"Heavy rain events are a direct consequence of climate change that is not spared Saxony-Anhalt," warned Willingmann. The card shows precisely, where flooding can occur in Saxony-Anhalt. It is an indispensable tool for municipalities to take measures in good time and protect human life before a disaster occurs. Becker added that the card is not necessary at administrative borders and is necessary for all of Germany.

where do floods threaten?

The new card reveals the critical flow paths of the rainwater and identifies endangered areas. Large cities such as Magdeburg and smaller places such as Eilsdorf and Dolchau are particularly affected. In Halle (Saale), the map shows alarming fluid speeds in areas such as the Mühlweg and on Glauchaer Platz. The danger zones are clearly marked: flooding could threaten at the top, on the racetrack and on the Gimritzer Damm!

In order to help the municipalities in this critical situation, the Ministry of the Environment provides up to 35 million euros via the Climate III funding program. These funds are to be used to adapt to climate adjustment and to improve flood and heavy rain risk management. The heavy rain hazard card is another important step towards risk prevention against natural hazards and can be called up on the BKG website. Be warned and act quickly!
