Ukrainian refugees in Saarland: stories of hope and new beginning
In a moving project of the Ukrainefreundaar e.V. association, the fate of Ukrainian refugees in Saarland is illuminated. Under the title "My Life - My Film", nine protagonists tell their personal stories and show impressive pictures and videos that they have recorded in Ukraine and Germany. The trilogy "Yesterday ... today ... tomorrow ..." takes the audience on an emotional journey through the experiences of these people who have been living in Germany since 2022
The stories begin with "Yesterday ...", where Oksana, Kateryna and Olga remind of the period between 2014 and 2022. This phase was characterized by the annexation of the Crimea and the conflict in eastern Ukraine. Despite the challenges, they tried to rebuild their life in the west of Ukraine. But the reality changed dramatically on February 24, 2022, when Alina, Zeinep and Valentyna woke up in a new, terrible reality. Russian tanks rolled through their cities and they had to leave their home country and start new in Germany. Her stories are not only reports of loss, but also about hope and the incessant will to integrate in a new environment.
A look into the future
In the section "Morgen ...", Alla, Mykola and Vita describe how they have settled in Saarland. They learn the German language, search for work and support each other as well as their families in Ukraine. Her conviction that democracy and human rights are the basis for peaceful coexistence shapes its positive view of the future. They dream of a liberal and peaceful Ukraine and a united Europe.
The project is in cooperation with the Filmhaus Saarbrücken and funded by the RAG Foundation as part of the program "Live Democracy!" in partnership with the state capital of Saarbrücken.
