History division: St. Wendel celebrates 600 years of Sebastianus brotherhood!
The St. Sebastianus Brotherhood, founded in St. Wendel in 1441, has played an important role in the support of needy and relief from needs in the region since its creation. Created to combat plague and famine, it was launched by citizens from all social classes in order to fight together against the challenges of the time. Since then, its members undertake mutual support, which is a central element of the Brotherhood.
The brotherhood currently has around 250 members, which include both men and women. Brother master Anton Stier and Bruderknecht Bernd Naumann and brother writer Jörg Wingertszahn are responsible for the management. Those responsible are supported by four other members of the Brother Council. The brotherhood is organized similar to a medieval craftsman and adapts to social change over the centuries. A poor fund was also set up in order to support the needy in emergency situations, such as Saarbruecker-zeitung.de reported.
religious traditions and festive days
The St. Sebastianus Brotherhood regularly organizes services and accompanies funerals, which underlines religious customs within the community. Her patron saint, St. Sebastian, who is considered a patron against the plague, and St. Fabian, who helps against famine, will be celebrated on January 20. On this patronage day there is a high office for the living and deceased members as well as a ceremony with speech and commemoration.
The brotherhood sees itself as a over -confessional and accepts donations without viewing social or denominational belonging. Membership has been continuously documented since it was founded, with newborns often registered according to the family tradition. The registration of new members is traditionally registered on Sebastian Day in the brotherhood restaurant, the Café Lerner. According to pg-wnd.de , the donation that is paid by the members can vary annually and take place at their own discretion. Brother council members are also subject to a commandment requirement and forego a general assembly or board election, which serves control by the brother council.
