The thief gang strikes: Homburg-Erbach and Jägersburg in sight!

In the night from October 18 to October 19, 2024, the city of Homburg was hit by several thefts from vehicles and garages. Above all, those affected were the streets "Vogelbacher Weg" and "Heckenweg" in Erbach and the street "In the Muhl" in Jägersburg. The Homburg police inspection states that the perpetrators were presumably two men who gained access to the vehicles using a special method, the so-called "code grapping". This method is used to pick up the radio signal of car breaks and open the doors.

The thieves searched the vehicles and the garages nearby for valuables. While no damage to the vehicles occurred, the perpetrators captured bicycles and other objects with a total value of around 5,400 euros. The police have already set an investigation group and asks the public for help. If you can provide relevant information on the incidents, you are asked to contact the Homburg police inspection on 06841/1060.

Type of crimes and legal consequences

The current incidents are in the context of increasing theft numbers in Germany. According to statistical surveys, the number of thefts increased by 20 percent in 2022 compared to the previous year, with a total of around 1.8 million registered cases. This significant increase raises questions about security in public space. While some thefts, such as that of money, are only about 8 percent cleared up, shop crime or small thefts are often more successful in clarification.

Simple theft can be punished in Germany with up to five years in prison, and in more serious cases, such as with gang theft or when a weapon is involved, even at up to ten years. These legal framework underlines the importance of investigating such offenses and the role of the police in the prevention of future crimes. Although the numbers are alarming, the police continue to carry out educational measures and work closely with local communities.

Wider security measures and prevention initiatives are crucial to protect the population from such crimes and to promote the feeling of security. The police call up all citizens to be vigilant and report suspicious activities immediately. Such views are important in order to strengthen the cooperation between the population and the police, which can ultimately contribute to fighting crime.
