Saarlouis sets a new GPS reference point for precise navigation!

Saarlouis, Deutschland - Saarlouis, a place that is now characterized by precision! Together with the Lions Club and the State Office for Surveying, Geoinformation and Land Development (LVGL), the district town has created a brand new GPS reference point at Ravelin V. This highly accurate point was precisely determined with a geodetic GNSS recipient and the satellite positioning service of the German state surveying offices (SAPOS). A real progress for navigation in Saarland, because the first GPS reference point was set up in Ottweiler in 2020!

"GPS receiver are indispensable for the exact position determination on earth," explains Minister Berg. This technology is not only important for leisure use when hiking, cycling or geocaching, but also for emergencies in which every second counts. Conventional GPS devices often only achieve an accuracy of three to 20 meters. The new reference point will revolutionize this accuracy and enables the positioning to be checked and improved.

Ravelin V is not only a technical highlight, but also a historically valuable place that attracts numerous visitors. Gerald Purucker, deputy of the city of Saarlouis, emphasizes that the reference point not only improves the GPS data, but also offers visitors and residents better orientation. "Now you can calibrate your cell phone and explore the city even better," said Purucker.

Stefan Bost, President of the Lions Club Saarlouis, emphasizes the importance of this project for the city and its visitors. "Thanks to the support of our former President Prof. Dr. Dieter Bohr, this project becomes a reality and improves orientation for everyone, including visually impaired people." The use of the signal of at least four navigation satellites ensures that the position determination becomes faster and more reliable. With the new GPS reference point, Saarlouis becomes a pioneer in precise navigation!
