Job cuts in Saarland: 300,000 jobs in the metal industry threatened!
Alarm level red for the industry in Saarland! According to Oswald Bubel, President of the Association of the Saarland Metal and Electrical Industry (Saar), a massive job cuts will be threatened in the next five years. The worrying forecast provides for a loss of up to 300,000 jobs in the entire industry! This corresponds to a dramatic decline of more than seven percent in Saarland.
"These bad messages are unmistakable and we cannot expect new settlements that create many jobs at short notice," says Bubel. According to his words, a noticeable job cuts have already started, especially for companies such as Ford in Saarlouis and ZF in Saarbrücken. The suppliers are also in danger of losing additional jobs. The background is an unexpected decline in order, which has forced many companies to their knees in recent years. "A recovery is expected at the earliest in 2026," he warns.
The employers under pressure: Discussion about wages and jobs
Jörg Köhlinger from IG Metall sees the dark forecast skeptical. He describes the assessments of employers as dubious and demands more transparency in the calculation bases. "It is questionable whether you can predict the future," he says. "Instead, employers should take upcoming collective groups seriously." Currently, the collective bargaining for the ME employees is on the crucial point-the IG Metall demands a wage increase of seven percent, while employers only offer 3.6 percent. October 28th ends the obligation to peace and the negotiations continue.
