Fight for digital education: Saarland's minister calls for financing offensive!

In Germany, the President of the Conference of Ministers of Culture (KMK), Christine Streichert-Clivot, urges a rapid agreement with the federal government to put the digital pact 2.0 into force. In an interview, she underlined the urgency of this financing question, which is crucial for the start in the coming year. As Saarland Minister of Education, she sees the need to give schools planning security, especially since the budget negotiations are currently being extended in the various federal states.

for Streichert-Clivot it is clear that digitization in schools is progressing with "big and dynamic steps" and that the federal government has to play a greater financial role. The current status shows that so far there has been no specific financing proposal in the federal budget for the next year, which is not exactly easier to negotiate. "It doesn't make it easier for us," she said.

inadequate financial offers of the federal government

The Minister of Education Bettina Stark-Watzinger has so far announced that it will support the digital pact by 2030 with up to five billion euros, with the federal states being supposed to take over half of this sum. However, these financing conditions, especially the idea of a one -time extension of financial support, encounter rejection by the federal states. Compared to the first digital pact, which expired in May and has been equipped with 6.5 billion euros on the part of the federal government since 2019, the new financing is considered inadequate.

In the first digital pact, the country companies and municipalities only bore 10 percent of the costs, which meant that 90 percent of digitization expenditure, such as for laptops and digital plates, were taken over by the federal government. As part of the new place, Berlin wants to bear only 50 percent of the costs, which is not seen by the federal states.

Streichert-Clivot stated that against the background of the great importance of digitization, the proposed financing was not sufficient. "We have to get into sustainable financing," she said. Digitization in schools should no longer be reversed and requires extensive investments.

In the near future there will be a conference of the Minister of Education, in which Stark-Watzinger is also expected. For Strichert-Clivot, this is a positive signal with regard to the upcoming negotiations and the desired digital pact 2.0. These conversations could be crucial for whether the new digital pact can come into force in the planned period of time and what financial means the schools need to keep up and modernize the lessons.

The decision to finance the digital pact is not only important for school authorities, parents and students, but also has far -reaching effects on the digital development of schools in Germany. In view of the current challenges, it is therefore essential that everyone involved quickly reaches an agreement.
