Weighed 2024: Small, but full of flavors - where the grapes shine!

The wine harvest in Germany screams for attention! The yield is alarming: nationwide the harvest is nine percent below the previous year. While the taste of the grapes is supposed to be highly explosive, the consequences of extreme weather conditions show up turbulent!

in Rhineland-Palatinate the wine harvest breaks down dramatically in individual regions, and this is no coincidence! The AHR suffers massively from late frosts, which reduce the harvesting amount by frightening 64 percent. The smallest harvest has even been expected on the Moselle in five decades - Hail has also added to the viticulture there. But not everything is dark: in the Palatinate, the decline is only four percent, and the largest wine -growing region, Rheinhessen, even reports an increase in the harvest!

Weather with a goodie

Despite the adverse circumstances, the quality must not be neglected! The German wine institute calls this year's harvest “small but fine”. The rain brought mushroom diseases into the vineyards, but it was also celebrated as a lifeguard for the vines after years of drought. Mineral -rich soils and a suitable good weather period in late summer allowed the grapes to optimally develop their flavors - a reason for toast!

But here the dark side comes: The price for barrel wine in the Palatinate is around 70 cents per liter, while the production costs of the winemakers are 1.20 euros per liter. Light due to rising prices, many consumers are reluctant to spend more, and wine bottles are often already a luxury goods for them that they do without!

A worrying picture is emerging: Out of 100 bottles of wine purchased are just 42 from German cultivation areas! The market for German wine needs a miracle to get going again!
