Decline of asylum seekers in Rhineland-Palatinate: What are the reasons?

In 2024, around 9,600 people were sought asylum in Rhineland-Palatinate, which represents a decline of almost 5,300 people compared to the previous year. These numbers were published by n-tv.de and show a clear acceptance of the asylum applicants in the region. In addition, 409 people came to Rhineland-Palatinate via special recording programs. The main origin countries of the asylum seekers were Syria, Türkiye, Afghanistan, Egypt and Somalia. Refugees who fled to Ukraine before the Russian attack war are not included in these figures. While the number of refugees Ukrainians rose by more than 1,000 to 11,175 in 2024, more than 53,000 Ukrainians in Rhineland-Palatinate now live in Rhineland-Palatinate

Integration Minister Katharina Binz described the number of asylum seekers as still high despite the decline. The capacity of the recording facilities fluctuated between 6,000 and 7,700 places last year, with an average of 4,057 places occupied.

increase in the asylum lagoon

The development of the number of asylum, however, goes hand in hand with an increase in asylum lawsuits in Rhineland-Palatinate. As Rheinpfalz.de , the number of asylum plates in 2023 has increased until the end of 2024 estimated 5,100 lawsuit and urgent procedures are expected. The increase in complaints is almost 25 percent compared to the previous year, which is partly due to the decision -making practice of the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) as well as to a settlement backlog. The decline in the number of asylum has led to fewer recordings and hearings in the BAMF, while the proceedings in court have increased due to the mining process.

2016 and 2017 record numbers of asylum law procedures were recorded with almost 11,000 or more than 14,200 procedures. In 2023, there have been over 4,000 procedures for the first time since 2019 at the Trier Administrative Court. The main areas of origin of the applicants are Türkiye, Syria, Pakistan, Egypt, Afghanistan and Somalia. The complaints often result from rejected asylum applications or the desire for a more comprehensive protection status. At the end of 2023, the inventory of lawsuits was estimated at around 2,290, compared to 1,455 at the end of 2022.
