Emergency room Trier: Patient tower due to a shortage of doctors alerts clinic!
in Trier, where the emergency room of the Borromae woman's mother house is under pressure, the number of patients increases dramatically! Around 30,000 patients are already being expected for this year - an increase of almost 15 percent compared to the previous year, when 26,000 people were treated. The Situation is becoming increasingly precarious, because fewer and fewer general practitioners are available in the region and the on -call services reduce their opening hours. The episode? More and more people are desperately looking for help in the emergency room!
Before the emergency room, patients await: a coughing woman, a man with pain after a bicycle accident and another with suspicion of appendicitis. Despite the rush, Daniel Stefka, the medical director, remains calm. "It only gets really full when around 50 patients are waiting in the corridors," he says. But that is exactly what happens more and more! The increasing number of emergencies means that the clinic staff must find creative solutions to manage the patients. "We sometimes work with a buzzer system as you know it from restaurants," explains clinic chief Christian Sprenger.
frequent escalations in the emergency room
But the challenges do not stop here! Long waiting times bring the mood to cook. "The triangle makes it difficult for some to understand why someone who has only been there for a quarter of an hour is suddenly there, while others have to wait hours," said Sprenger. This often leads to verbal attacks and even physical violence against the staff. "It is in no way acceptable, even if it were only once a year," emphasizes the clinic chief.
The reasons for overloading the emergency room are clear: too few resident doctors and an overloaded health system. Sprenger urgently calls for the expansion of outpatient health care to relieve the emergency rooms. "A rethinking of the population has to take place," Stefka appeals. The emergency room should be reserved for real emergencies - not for trivial! While the clinic continues to help every patient, the question remains: how long can this system work?
