Moselle-wine harvest 2023: The smallest harvest in 50 years, but high quality!

The wine harvest on the Moselle is in full swing and will continue until the end of the month. But bright faces are rare because the winemakers are faced with an unprecedented challenge!

This autumn the Moselwinzer harvest the smallest amount of the past 50 years! With shocking 510,000 hectoliters (51 million liters), the overall production in the port from Serrig to Koblenz is estimated. That is a terrifying 30 percent less than the average of the past ten years! In the previous year there were 724,000 hectoliters, but nature made a merciless judgment.

unbroken nature forces

The cause of these mini harvest is violent forces of nature: frost in April, devastating hail in May and fungal diseases that were favored by constant rainfalls make the winegrowing despair. There were particularly hard losses on the Saar and Ruwer as well as in the Trier area, where the frost destroyed entire harvests. Companies in the side valleys such as Lieser were hit particularly strongly and reported losses of up to 50 percent!

But there is also a ray of hope: Despite the setbacks, the winemakers expect a classic Moselle vintage with good quality. Henning Seibert, the chairman of Mosel wine, lets hope flash: "It is a cabinet and late reading year, the basis for fine, aromatic wines is given." Almost 95 percent of the harvest are white wine varieties, and the Queen of the Moselle, the Riesling, makes up 60 percent. A little consolation for the winemakers in this difficult time!
