Small memorial events in the diocese of Speyer: A sign of hope

Speyer, Deutschland - Speyer. On November 18, 2024, the memorial day for those affected by sexual abuse is committed in the diocese of Speyer, an annual event that was launched on the initiative of Pope Francis. However, there is an exciting turn this year: Instead of a central event, the diocese calls for numerous small commemorative celebrations in church facilities. This decision was made by the advisory board and the prevention network to offer the victims a personal and intimate commemoration.

Vicar General Markus Magin has invited all facilities of the diocese to participate in this special day. The idea is that teams and groups come together for a biblical impulse, personal exchange and prayer. "This can happen, for example, at lunchtime with the teammates, in the afternoon in a public place or at the beginning of a session with any committees," explains Magin. A specially created handout offers suggestions for a memorial stay that the story of Daniel and Susanna was discussed and inspired by Katrin Brockmöller.

together strong in memory

The wish behind this initiative is clear: the main and volunteers of the diocese should be reinforced by the exchange and the joint inspection. The small gatherings should offer space for reflection and solidarity in order to give those affected a voice of sexual abuse and to appreciate their stories. This new form of commemoration could represent a significant step towards a more open and supportive community.
