Giant apple conquers Harthausen: 532 grams heavy and sour!
Giant apple conquers Harthausen: 532 grams heavy and sour!
in Harthausen, between the towns of Berghausen and Heiligenstein, the couple Elke and Bernhard Sona experienced a surprising discovery on their fruit plot. While they were busy with the harvest of their apple, plum and peach trees, Elke Sona caught the eye of something very unusual: a huge apple shone red in the upper part of an apple tree.
"I fished it down, he just fit into the basket of the apple harvest," reports Elke enthusiastically. The special thing about this apple was not only its striking color, but also its size. With a circumference of around 36 centimeters, this apple was almost as large as the head of a newborn baby. Compared to the other fruits that were about fist sized, this giant apple set new standards.
The weight control and the taste test
The Sonas, proud of their discovery, decided to bring the impressive apple home. On the scale there was an impressive weight of 532 grams. This old fruit variety, which Elke Sona cannot name, reminded of earlier times than such large apples appeared more frequently. Usually the sonas process their apples in a cider factory in Wiesloch to win delicious juice. But this time the giant apple was too good for that. "We ate him," says Elke Sona. "He wasn't that good, very angry," she stated with a smile. "We should have stored him a little more."
This surprising discovery takes place in the framework of the tenth Rheinpfalz garden Olympiad, which awards a colorful variety of vegetables and fruit. Whether larger tomatoes or exotic plants - creativity does not count here. The Sona couple plans to present their giant apple as part of these celebrations.
If you want to take part in this event, you can contact Redspe@rheinpfalz.de by email and enter your name, place of residence and a telephone number. Photos of special products are also welcome.
The garden Olympiad honors the most creative participation with prices in various categories such as "superlative", "exotic" and "strange".
With such an extraordinary discovery, such as the giant apple, Elke and Bernhard Sona show that nature is always good for surprises. It remains to be seen whether your fruit will ultimately also be awarded in one of the categories, as well as the many other contributions to the garden Olympics that may come.
