Downtown oases: dismantling at the Kaufhof, but remains the cathedral square?

Domplatz, Speyer, Deutschland - The inner city oases in Speyer, the popular wooden seat furniture, are the focus of the current discussion! After a recommendation of the construction committee to extend the campaign by the end of 2025, the city administration has now started the reduction of the oasis at the Kaufhof. The reason? The upcoming Christmas and New Year market, which begins on November 25th and takes large parts of Maximilianstrasse. The city wants to make space and has decided that the oasis must give way to the Kaufhof!

winter changes

But that's not all! The remaining oases should stop over the winter, contrary to the original plans of the administration, to reduce them. This applies above all to the postplace and possibly also the cathedral square, provided that the city council agrees on November 14th. Press spokeswoman Janine Friedmann emphasizes that the decision for the cathedral square is more complicated, since additional permits from various authorities, including the state monument conservation and the UNESCO, have to be obtained.

The oasis on the cathedral square is in direct visibility to the impressive Romanesque cathedral, which is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. But not everyone is thrilled! The Speyer CDU has already announced that it would speak out against the oasis at this location. The discussion about the inner city oases remains exciting, while the city administration is preparing for the upcoming holidays!
