Pirmasens turns asphalt desert into green Schillerplatz!
Schillerplatz, 66953 Pirmasens, Deutschland - pirmasens shines in new splendor! The city has won the nationwide biodiversity competition "Gray makes green" and was rewarded with prize money of 30,000 euros for the environmentally friendly redesign of Schillerplatz. The square was inaugurated on November 15th. Mayor Markus Zwick is enthusiastic: "We are Megastolz that we were taken into account here in Pirmasens." The innovative concept comes from André Jankwitz, the head of the garden and cemetery office, which convinces with creative ideas.
a flagship project for the future
dr. Eva Lohse, board member of the "Living City" foundation, described Schillerplatz as "best practice example". The Pirmasens concept of 55 applicants particularly impressed the jury. "The before and after comparison could not be more impressive," said Lohse. The redesign includes special measures for water storage and the selection of resistant plants that guarantee a long flowering period. The once oversized place is now becoming safe and inviting for all users through a Tempo 30 zone and a new cycling control.
The drastic reduction in the asphalt surfaces - around 230 square meters were dismantled - and the creation of 300 square meters of new green areas transform the asphalt desert into a lively neighborhood place. These measures not only contribute to the deceleration of traffic, but also create a safe environment for pedestrians. The new climate -resistant trees, including linden and trumpet trees, improve the microclimate and offer urgently needed shadows.
a meeting point for the residents
The project, which costs a total of 60,000 euros, is supported by the “Natural Climate Protection in Municipalities” program. The planning and implementation, which took place from July to November, was carried out by the employees of the city of Pirmasens' economic and service business and the construction company Peter Groß Infrastructure. Schillerplatz should not only be a place of relaxation, but also a meeting point for the residents who have been actively involved in the planning. With seating and play opportunities for children, this place becomes the new heart of the city!
