Mainz says no to defensive architecture: create space for everyone!

Holzstraße/Augustinerstraße, Mainz, Deutschland - A dramatic step in Mainz: The city council has decided today to abolish the controversial "defensive architecture"! What does that mean specifically? No more metal bars, people from sitting or lying down! This decision comes in response to the outrageous measures of the Mainz networks, which in 2018 transformed a seat into a place of displacement. Instead of fighting homelessness, the stay was simply made impossible by the needy. The left speaks of a scandal!

The idea behind defensive architecture is clear: it is intended to prevent people, especially homeless, public places. But reality looks different! In Mainz, poles have already been installed at various locations, such as the transformer station on Holzstraße, which make lingering impossible. "Replacement does not solve any problems," says the left. The city must take responsibility and ensure that all people have their place in the city!

a joint application for more humanity

In a joint application by the CDU, Greens, SPD and the left, it has now been decided that the city administration should take steps to enable the sitting and lying down at the transformer station. In addition, the needs of seniors and homeless people should be taken into account when choosing city furniture. "We all want to live together," says the reason. Mainz should be a place where nobody is excluded, whether poor or rich!

with 51 votes in favor, 4 no votes and the application was accepted without abstentions. Mainz shows that there is another way: instead of driving people away, a place for everyone should be created. A brave step in the right direction!
