Bingen's fire brigade: life-saving chainsaw training in the forest!

In Bingen am Rhein, a comprehensive series of training for fire brigade comrades recently took place in order to increase the safety of dealing with chainsaws. Around 30 members of the volunteer fire brigades took part in this training, which focused on the particularly dangerous activity of dealing with chainsaws. One focus was on using the special protective clothing and the important safety regulations. This training is crucial because the use of chainsaws is one of the most risky activities of the fire brigade. Fire brigades often come to operations in which fallen trees lead to dangerous situations.

The fire brigade clearly regulated the use of chainsaws; They are considered important rescue devices in emergency situations according to the state of fire and civil protection law (LBKG). Such operations are often necessary when people are injured or trapped by fallen trees or the access to the site is blocked. Targeted training is essential here to convey the necessary skills to the firefighters.

training system and practical exercises

In order to ensure the qualification of the firefighters, the Rhineland-Palatinate accident fund and the Rhineland-Palatinate State Fire Brigade Association have developed a new training concept. The implementation of the theory and practice was led by Christian von Stramberg, an active member of the Bingen fire brigade and trained fire brigade instructor in the Mainz-Bingen district. He achieved his qualifications through intensive training at the forest education center in Hachenburg.

The theory units of the training included various important topics. The fire brigade comrades got to know regulations and security guidelines that must be observed when dealing with chainsaws. This also includes the knowledge of the protective clothing and the various accident hazards that can occur in direct connection with the use of chainsaws.

For the practical part it went into the Binger Wald. In three groups, various stations were run over several Saturdays, where the participants were able to learn specific skills. At one of the stations, von Stramberg supported the participants in the so -called bending simulator. With this special device, the correct cutting of wood was trained correctly, which is of crucial importance for the safe handling of chainsaws.

At other stations, the trainers Michael Jayme, Frank Polzer and Dominik Schätzl took over the training. Here the comrades not only learned the correct handling of the chainsaws, but also how to change the saw chains and tense correctly. Another important topic was the safe handling of operating substances such as petrol and chain oil, as there are also many dangers here.

Thomas Baldenbach, another trainer, trained the firefighters in various cutting techniques. These included the creation of the fall notch and the pruning, techniques that are of crucial importance for the safe and efficient work with chainsaws.

These training measures are an important step to promote security in fire service and ensure that the firefighters are prepared in the best possible way in order to be able to act in emergency situations. The use of chainsaws becomes considerably safer through the well -founded training, which can be life -saving in the event of operations with fallen trees.
