Snow catastrophe in the Märkisches Kreis: five injured after accidents!
In the night of January 9, 2025, the onset of winter in North Rhine-Westphalia ensured numerous police missions. Since the beginning of the snowfall yesterday evening, the police have recorded over 40 missions, while around ten further weather -related operations are currently being processed, as the police reported.
Especially in Plettenberg there was a traffic accident last night at 9:50 p.m., in which four people were slightly injured when a driver got on oncoming traffic on a smooth road and collided with another vehicle. The police were also challenged in Werdohl: a snow plow on Ascheyer Strasse slipped into a car this morning at 7.18 a.m. In Lüdenscheid, a 76-year-old senior also plunged into the tracks at 7.55 a.m. with his Skoda at the train station after not recognizing the platform edge due to the closed blanket of snow; Fortunately, he was not injured. The track had to be blocked for the rescue of the vehicle.
Face risk in Germany
As shown in other reports, there is a significant risk of black ice in large parts of Germany. Numerous flights and trains were delayed in the affected regions and there were numerous traffic accidents. The German Weather Service (DWD) had initially proclaimed level 3 storm warnings, but later lifted them. Current warnings of level 2 now indicate "striking weather".
In Frankfurt am Main, 120 out of 1,090 planned starts and landings were canceled, and 35 flights had to be canceled as a precaution at Munich Airport. BER Airport was also faced with failures, where around 20 flights were not carried out and the number of landings was limited to 20 per hour. The rail traffic also suffers from the winter conditions, delays and failures in the Frankfurt area.
Traffic accidents were registered in several federal states due to black ice. Some drivers were still on the sovereign smooth road conditions with summer tires, which led to accidents. In Koblenz in particular, 17 injuries were reported due to snow or freezing moisture, while 20 traffic accidents were recorded on smooth lanes in the Freiburg police headquarters. On Sunday morning, a car of the federal police also crashed on the A81, with five officials being slightly injured.
