In a planned and careful campaign, the Technical Relief Agency (THW) in Birkenfeld successfully blown up several damaged respiratory protection bottles. This was done in close cooperation with the fire and disaster protection inspector of the Birkenfeld district, which dragged the sustainable group. The reason for this extraordinary measure was a dangerous incident in which the valves of a total of eight respiratory protection bottles were damaged, which ultimately led to the closure of the bottles.

The implementation of the explosion was a necessary security measure, since the affected bottles were no longer transportable. In order to carry out the explosion safely, a hole two meters deep, into which the bottles were safely placed. Then special cutting loads were attached to the valves. In order for the explosion to be controlled and without undesirable effects, the pit was covered with a robust wooden structure before it was sealed with ten tons of sand. These measures should ensure that the compressed air that was in the bottles did not escape uncontrollably.

During the explosion, a safety radius of 150 meters was determined to ensure the safety of everyone involved. Damaged respiratory protection bottles cover a considerable risk due to the pressure under pressure. In the event of an uncontrolled exit, the bottle could act like a floor, which could cause considerable injuries and damage to property. The process carried out shows how important it is to proactively manage such risks and professionally dispose of dangerous materials.

The THW not only defused potential dangerous situations with this measure, but also demonstrated how cleverly and professionally can be dealt with with dangerous fabrics.
