Memory of the flood: Memorial stele unveiled!

The devastating flood in the Ahr Valley has been a few years ago, but the traces of the catastrophe are still deeply rooted in the memory of the people. In order to keep the memories alive and to commemorate the victims, an important commemoration project in Müsch, a place in the Ahrweiler district, is now being launched. This initiative has the goal of revealing a first memorial stele that is supposed to be part of a greater "path of memory".

The “Memoriahr” citizens' initiative announced that these stele will symbolically stand for all areas affected by the flood and that the pain and the remarkable solidarity of the community should make it visible. A total of 34 such steles are planned, which are set up in the entire flood region. Each of these steles is provided with four information boards that deal with important topics related to the flood, its coping and reconstruction.

"The tables will report on the events of the flood, the challenges that the reconstruction brought with it, as well as important projects that were created as lighthouses in the region," said a spokesman for the initiative. Topics such as flood protection, the operations of the rescue workers as well as the revival of wine cultivation and tourism after the flood are of central importance.

Another interesting component of the project is the accompanying virtual exhibition. The citizens' initiative plans that a digital connection is created by QR codes attached to the memorial steeling. This exhibition is expected to be available online from December and thus offers additional access to information about the flood disaster and its consequences.
