Mental health in danger: Every third party was already unable to work!

Current surveys show alarming trends in relation to the mental health of the German population. According to the Civey survey on behalf of DEVK Insurance, around 40 percent of Germans fear that they will develop mentally in the future. This aspect becomes particularly explosive when you consider that sick leave has risen steadily in recent years due to mental problems. The loads in the workplace often result from a lack of staff and constantly growing requirements.

In particular, the DAK psych report points out that absenteeism has increased by more than 50 percent due to mental illnesses in the past ten years. In a population -representative survey, around 72 percent of those surveyed stated that they felt mentally good. Nevertheless, almost 23 percent show a negative assessment of their mental health.

The survey showed that the unemployed and parents of children in particular see a higher probability of developing mentally. Among the unemployed stated almost 60 percent to expect a mental illness. In comparison, the self -employed and pensioners assess the probability of being affected as significantly lower. Men express themselves more pessimistic than women.

Young people between the ages of 18 and 29 seem more optimistic. Around 55 percent believe that in the future they will not become unable to work due to mental symptoms. According to the survey results, however, there are still a considerable number of 22.8 million affected people who have already been unable to work due to psychological problems.

Maike Adamski, Medical Officer at DEVK Life Insurance, points out that around a third of the requests for occupational disability insurance are submitted due to mental illness. DEVK life insurance supports its insured in this stressful situation. Over 75 percent of the submitted benefits are approved, which means that those affected can concentrate on their recovery without having to worry about financial worries.

The increasing stress can be made from the support of social contacts, as the survey shows: 54.3 percent of the participants like to spend time in nature, while 41.8 percent spend time with friends or family. Sport is regarded by 37 percent of the respondents as an important aspect of their mental health, while only 21 percent pay attention to a healthy diet.

Despite the positive approaches to prevention, the use of psychotherapeutic offers remains low. Only 7 percent of those surveyed state that they regularly claim therapy. A survey shows that especially people between the ages of 40 and 49 consider this more necessary. Maike Adamski emphasizes: "It is important to look for help from experts if you feel bad. Therapy can make a decisive contribution to improving the quality of life."

The survey, which was carried out between 27 and 28 August 2024, comprised 2,500 people aged 18 and over in Germany and thus offers valuable insights into the current psychological state of health of the population.
