Political disruption: Who can Germany rule after the election?
On February 7, 2025, Germany faces a turbulent political situation, with the upcoming Bundestag election on February 23. The Union under Friedrich Merz is considered a more likely winner, but stable majorities remain a long way off. SPD and the Greens, which weaken, increasingly tighten their attacks on Merz. The SPD in particular criticizes it sharply and speaks of a "pile of broken glass" that it would leave. The sharp election campaign and the future of the coalitions
After Merz brought a controversial migration policy with the support of the AfD, the election campaign became increasingly heated. Olaf Scholz, the Chancellor of the SPD, accuses Merz a "taboo break". The prospect of cooperation between the SPD and the Union seems to be waning, while Merz continues to hope for coalition negotiations. SPD parliamentary group leader Rolf Mützenich clearly explained that cooperation with Merz was "hardly conceivable", while Greens boss Robert Habeck speaks of an "insurmountable crisis of trust". This hopeless dilemma could lead to the Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier playing a crucial role if it is not possible to make a clear government. According to Deutschlandfunk there are already efforts to redefine the government with one focus on the competitiveness of German industry and the modernization of the country.
The CDU has adopted an “immediate program”, which includes measures to limit migration and to strengthen internal security. Merz and CSU boss Söder emphasize the need to change direction for Germany and at the same time distance themselves from working with the AfD. They compare the current political course strongly with that of their predecessors and explain that the country has to lead the country back to innovation and an entrepreneurial spirit. In the meantime, thousands of people demonstrate against right -wing extremism and possible cooperation with the AfD, which further reinforces the tense atmosphere during this critical election period.
