Austria's opinion: 81% for stopping family reunification!
The political debate in Austria about the stop of the family reunification for asylum seekers is experiencing a new highlight. A current survey, which was carried out by political advisor Thomas Hofer and opinion researcher Peter Hajek on behalf of ATV, shows that an overwhelming majority of 81 percent of the Austrians entitled to vote supports an immediate stop. The salon of the decision-making, the political talk format "Current: Die Woche", presents the results of this survey this evening at 10:30 p.m. The consent of the ÖVP and the FPÖ supporters was particularly strong, each with 96 percent and 94 percent approval. These developments show that the attitude towards immigration and family reunification has shifted significantly in society, as well as mediatienst-integration.de
legal aspects of the debate
Family reunification, especially for those who are entitled to protection, is not only the focus of political discussions in Austria, but also in Germany. According to media service-integration.de , the family reunification for subsidiary protected was suspended in 2015 before it was reintroduced under strict conditions. The suspension of the family reunification is currently being considered again, for which the CDU, CSU and SPD plead as a possible coalition partner in the Bundestag. Such measures are extremely delicate because they touch the rights from the German Constitution and the European Convention on Human Rights, in particular the right to respect for family life.
Psychological stress due to separations and the challenges of integration are also in the foreground of the research debate. Experts emphasize that family separations can have negative effects on the life of refugees and their integration into society. Dr. Benjamin Etzold from the Bonn International Center for Conflict Studies warns that many people have to fall back on irregular ways to bring their families back together, which entails both social and legal problems.
