Austria's energy consumption: traffic sector under pressure!

Wien, Österreich - Vienna is under energetic pressure: A third of the entire energy requirement in Austria is eliminated on mobility and goods transport, reports the VCÖ . The largest energy guesser in the traffic sector is vehicle traffic, which only has 87 percent of consumption. Measures to save energy consumption are urgently required, and in an online event, the VCÖ called for a relocation to public transport and bicycles as well as the electrification of traffic. In 2023, the traffic sector needed 345 Petajoule Energie, with almost 300 petajoules being consumed by car traffic. Currently, only four percent of cars in Austria are electric cars, which shows the immense savings potential in the electrification of the vehicle fleet.

challenges of the automotive industry

The picture in the German auto industry is dark. According to an analysis of berylls, 2025 becomes a heavy stress test that is comparable to the pandemic. In view of stricter CO₂ limit values, pressure is exerted on manufacturers and suppliers in order to increase the sales of electric cars through discounts. However, this has a significant impact on the profit tension: the margins of the suppliers have already dropped to 5.5 percent, while the manufacturers only have 7.2 percent. The remaining pressure is reinforced by the need to react to the worldwide growing demand for electromobility, while the market in Germany is behind expectations. A forecast by Deloitte shows that only 11.2 million electric cars could be on German roads by 2030, which is 3.8 million below the set goal.

The conventional structures in the industry are opposed to change, which can also lead to job losses. The industry has already recorded sales of around 25 billion euros this year. In addition, a decline in employees was registered by 1.5 percent. Political measures, such as a planned charging current credit of 1,000 euros, are intended to try to promote sales of electric cars. But the disagreement about which strategy is the right makes implementation difficult. While the Greens urge to promote electromobility, the FDP rely on technology -open approaches.
