Austrians spend 159 euros on Easter - a festival of gifts!
The anticipation of Easter in Austria and Germany not only brings family gatherings with it, but also significant expenses. According to a current survey, the Austrians spend an average of 159 euros per capit to gifts and festive dinner. This is an increase that aims at a return to the level of 2023 after a decline of about 10% was recorded in the previous year. Easter after Christmas, especially in stationary retail, is the second most important festival.
Total sales of 270 million euros in retail are expected for the Easter business in Austria. The most common purchases are chocolate buns, eggs and toys. Around 77% of the people surveyed plan to give someone to Easter, whereby the average expenses for gifts increase to 55 euros per capita, compared to 50 euros in the previous year. In particular, sweets, chocolate and chocolates rose as the most popular gift with a preference of 70%. Other frequent gifts are colored eggs (44%) and toys (28%).
Easter trends and regional differences
The regional differences in the expenses are also remarkable. Styria and Carinthia each record the highest expenditure per capita with 167 euros each, followed by Vienna with 165 euros. In contrast, the residents of Upper Austria and Salzburg spend the least 145 euros for Easter. In addition, almost 20% of the population plans to give away nothing at Easter, often for religious or family reasons.
According to a survey by the Chamber of Commerce, the total expenditure for Easter is around 295 million euros, which represents an increase compared to the 270 million euros in the previous year. In the anticipation for the festival, retailers expect the sale of around 23 million chocolate bunnies and 68 million Easter eggs.

In neighboring Germany, a similar picture is shown. The Trade Association of Germany (HDE) expects Easter business in 2023 with sales of 2.2 billion euros in retail. Over 40 percent of consumers plan to specifically spend money around Easter. The most frequently purchased goods are also food, flowers and toys. The average expenses per capita for Easter purchases are 40 euros in Germany.
Both countries show that Easter is a significant reason for consumption and that consumers are willing to invest in gifts and festive dishes in order to celebrate the festival. These trends are also supported by special advertising measures and the planning of retailers who aim to increase sales and maximize sales.
