These increases are distributed over two years, with the adjustments in North Rhine-Westphalia 6.5 percent and in the East German federal states up to 8.4 percent. This was particularly important because it was feared that a strike could lead to cash on ATMs shortly before Christmas, which would have affected many people during the holiday business.
The negotiations were shaped by intensive discussions, while the workforce had repeatedly called up to warning strikes, which kept leading to small interruptions in cash supply. Despite these tensions, the companies were able to provide larger stocks of cash in machines to prevent possible bottlenecks, as reported. The new agreement will be effective from the beginning of 2025 and brings considerable increases in costs for the companies, which, according to the employer representative Hans-Jörg Hisam, could result in business consequences.
satisfaction despite challenges
ver.di, the union, expressed a positive statement about the agreement and described the conclusion as justifiable. Negotiator Sonja Austermühle emphasized that the long breath of the negotiating parties had paid off. The members had previously rejected a compromise in a vote, which got the negotiations rolling again. After 66.9 percent voted against the common draft, the negotiations had been resumed. Ultimately, the agreement was reached, which not only addresses the financial challenges for the employees, but also ensures stability in cash supply in the critical Christmas season.
