Oberhausen fights against traffic jams: New traffic concept for Centro!

Visitors who drive to Centro Oberhausen in North Rhine-Westphalia know the problem too well: traffic jam. In order to counteract this annoyance, the city plans a number of measures to improve the flow of traffic around the shopping center. Every year the Centro attracts millions of people who use the versatile offers. But the rush often leads to overloaded streets, especially during large events in the nearby Rudolf Weber-Arena.

In a current advance, those responsible in Oberhausen present a comprehensive master plan, which includes five central measures. The aim of these initiatives is to make the journey to the Centro more stress -free. The focus is particularly on optimizing the transport infestation.

Details on the traffic master plan

The city plans to expand the narrow point on Osterfelder Straße - an important traffic artery from Bottrop to Centro - to twice the width from 2027. This decision is considered crucial to cope with the considerable traffic movements in the region. Particular attention also applies to the construction of a new "mobility hub" on the A42, north of the shopping center.

This hub will include a large parking garage that is built on the site of a decommissioned sewage treatment plant. From there, drivers should easily get to the Centro by cable car. In addition, e-scooters and e-bikes will be available to offer environmentally friendly alternatives for the short route to the shopping center. A new pedestrian bridge will also facilitate access between the parking garage and the center.

Another focus is on improving the street connections. The Konrad-Adenauer-Allee, which often has to struggle with traffic jams, is optimized by a wider bridge to improve the flow of traffic. In order to ensure even more mobility, a new stop for the regional trains RB32 and RB35 near the steel mill is also planned. These measures aim to improve the connections to the leisure area of Topgolf and create additional incentives for the use of public transport.

Expansion of the public transport offer

Another important part of the master plan is the extension of tram line 105. This is expanded to the Centro instead of ending in Essen-Frintrop. This should not only be better connected to the shopping center, but also the new residential area on the steelworks area and the Sterkrad train station. The connection is offered every 10 minutes, which represents a practical and clean alternative to the car.

The planned changes and improvements could bring considerable relief for the approximately 16 million people who visit the Centro and the Rudolf Weber-Arena every year. Nevertheless, the exact implementation dates are still pending. Historically, such construction measures in Germany often last significantly longer than originally planned, and the residents and visitors may still have to expect traffic restrictions until these measures are fully implemented.

How the city of Oberhausen wants to reduce the traffic pressure around the Centro Oberhausen with its plans in future remains to be seen. However, with the master plan presented, you have already taken the first steps to improve the visitor's journey.
