Sylt in transition: Häckel's deselection leads to new opportunities for the community

in Sylt, ex-mayor Nikolas Häckel, who performed without party affairs, officially experienced his transfer to interim retirement on Wednesday evening. This happened at a meeting of the municipal voice committee in the town hall of Westerland. At the same time, the preliminary voting result was verified. Florian Korte, spokesman for the Sylt municipality, informed the German Press Agency that there were no concerns about the processes in the coordination and counting.

The voting from Häckel was a central topic in Sylt politics. On Sunday, 4,342 citizens voted for his deselection, while 860 votes were against this proposal. The step to initiate the vote procedure was decided by the local politicians on July 18. This was done in the assumption that Häckel led the administration, which he had been heading since 2015, in a way that was dissatisfied for many. In recent years, the community and Häckel have been under pressure, especially because of financial difficulties and communication deficits.

new challenges and opportunities

With the deselection of Häckel, the island now sees itself with challenges, but also opportunities. Markus Gippner, a member of the committee, commented: "We are in the middle of a turning point: Many options are open to us, we get a new household and think about a new administrative structure." These changes are necessary because the municipality is confronted with a variety of projects and an investment backlog.

The political arguments about Häckel were shaped by personal and administrative allegations. A lack of trust and communication problems contributed significantly to dissatisfaction. Despite the difficult circumstances, Häckel himself was not discouraged and announced that he wanted to travel to Bavaria for at least three months in the coming week to find time for himself.

After the deselection, Carsten Kerkamm was entrusted by the CDU with the provisional management of the official business. According to the municipal code, a new mayor must be elected by six months at the latest. This transition period could be crucial for the future orientation of municipal politics on Sylt.
