Mönchengladbach's main station: large renovation planned for commuters by 2028!

Mönchengladbach, Deutschland - A significant conversion is imminent for Mönchengladbach Central Station! Deutsche Bahn has officially started the work that will last until at least 2028. This train station, one of the 20 largest in North Rhine-Westphalia, gets urgently needed improvements, including new platforms and elevators to make it a "modern, attractive turntable" for the region.

The building investments amount to around twelve million euros, financed by the Rhein-Ruhr transport association (VRR), Deutsche Bahn and the federal government. The main goal? Move more commuters to exchange the car for the rail! The conversion of the Mönchengladbach train station takes place in parallel to the current conversion of the city's central Omnisbus station (ZOB), which should be completed in 2025.

conversion plans and time frame

What exactly will happen at the train station? Here are the most important measures:

  • Renewal of platform 4 (tracks 6/7) - Completion at the end of 2024.
  • Renewal of platform 2 (tracks 2/3) - BaubeGeg begins summer 2025, completion unclear.
  • Planning for platforms 1 and 3 (tracks 1 and 4/5) - construction not before 2026.
  • renewal of the elevators - start in 2025.

But be careful: the construction work has inevitable restrictions on rail traffic. Trains are redirected during the blocking breaks and stop at other platforms. The first block has already started and lasts until November 29th. The listed train station is of central importance for commuters towards Düsseldorf, Cologne and Aachen and was extensively renovated from 2009 to 2011. The renovation work in the past has already invested millions to improve the infrastructure.
