Lost letter from 1946: Krefeld journey through time discovered!
In the event of renovation work in the Krefeld "Ramrath" house on Westwall 54, there was a surprising discovery: Lukas and Käthe, who just reduced a built-in cabinet, found a lost letter from 1946. This discovery was carried out in the course of the simply glazed window of the house, which had previously fallen victim to the destruction in October 1944 Marie Agnes Rolfes documented in her letter.
Marie Agnes Rolfes, the daughter of the founders of the Ramrath pleated fuel, describes the horror of the bomb attack in the letter and reports on the flight of her family from Krefeld and the return after the war. The letter found was hidden as a time capsule together with a daily newspaper, a mirror magazine, lucky charms, photos and coins in 1988.
The historical value of the letter
Lukas, who found the letter, was deeply touched by its content and informed Axel Brunner, the previous owner of the house. Although Brunner initially hesitated to read the letter, he finally decided. After the exchange of old photos and finds in the Advent season, Käthe and Lukas planned to hand over the letter to the Krefeld city archive to make it accessible to the public.
The Krefeld city archive has been committed to visible in the history of the city and its citizens, as is documented, among other things, in the series "Krefeld Archive - Sources and Research on the History of the City of Krefeld and the Lower Rhine". This series, published by the Association for Local History Krefeld e.V., offers researchers for the Krefeld past and highlights the living conditions of the citizens across different epochs, as Krefeld.de
